Day 5 - Tuesday 2/12/08 4:13 PM

Ken called a few minutes ago.  He said "So far, so good".  She's stable right now.  They gave her medication to relax her so she could sleep.  It is just not her nature to lie around.  She had a good lunch today and then went back to sleep.  Ken doesn't think she realizes where she's at.  She seems to think she's at home and wants to go upstairs to her own bedroom and take a shower and is certain she has appointments she has to keep.  She is still very feisty.

They're in a "watch" period.  Day 4 to day 12-14 is a critical period.  They are concerned about basal spasms and are monitoring to prevent strokes or any other kind of damage.  He asks that the prayers continue and wants everyone to know how much he appreciates the good thoughts, concern and prayers.

Just so you know, I'm passing on all of your messages to Ken via a daily update.  I'm sure all of the kindness and concern that's being shown has helped him a great deal. -Marti-

Day 7 - Thursday, February 14, 2008 - 4 PM

Report from Marti - I haven't heard anything yet today. Norma's nephew visited her last night and said they are getting her up and into a chair but otherwise things seemed pretty much the same.  Ken stopped by the office for a few moments late yesterday. He was pretty tired and looked worn out. He's catching a cold. Norma doesn't seem to sleep a lot so consequently, neither does Ken. He went home last night for the first time since Friday to check on his sick dog.  He was worried he might have to put the dog to sleep (the dog is very old, blind and has many health issues). Anyone who knows Ken well knows what an animal lover he is and how difficult this would be for him at any time, let alone now. However, things worked out for the moment.  Debbie (Ken's other team member) chatted with him briefly this morning as he headed back to the hospital.

Some people have been worried about Ken and the fact that the hospital is so far from his home.  Everyone will be happy to know that a friend has a condo just blocks from the hospital and has offered it to Ken for the month.  So he does have somewhere close by to go to and get some sleep. It's fully furnished with everything from furniture to dishes.

One other thing…The manager of Norma's Crest Hill store called and mentioned that Nancy (Norma's sister) said they are monitoring Norma for vasospasms  This page will be updated as soon as more information is made available.

Day 8 - Friday, February 15, 2008

Ken left a message on voice mail this morning about 7:30 a.m.

Wednesday night was another rough night because Norma was constantly wanting to get out of bed and kept trying to get the restraints off. Then she had a tendency to sleep more during the day and be up more during the night.

Thursday night was a real good night. She slept most of the night except for being awakened every hour for assessments. The nurses would ask her to raise her arms, lift her knees, etc. which she has to do so they can make sure she's with it.

Ken said, "I know the prayers are helping so we would really appreciate continued prayer and concern for her. It's been pretty incredible that she's doing so well after what she had, so pass on to everybody that we really appreciate it. She's hanging in there. Every good day is one day closer to trying to get home."

This is to the person who is letting him use the condo - "Having the condo to go to has been a real blessing" and one he really appreciates, especially since he has a bad cold. He wants to say "THANK YOU!"

Day 10 - Sunday, February 17, 2008 - Noon

Ken left the following detailed voice message.  The entry (deleted from this page) made on Saturday made it sound like Norma is doing better than she really is.  This caused great concern because the family does not want your prayers to prematurely ease up even a bit.  Please keep praying!  Norma is still doing well, but on the other hand she has actually only had one peaceful night since 2/8.  Norma frequently tries to get out of bed during the night, perhaps to go to the powder room or upstairs to her own room (Sometimes she thinks she is still at home).  She is aware that she was supposed to be in New York this weekend with seven other buyers so she wanted to get home to pack.  So far there has only been one night when she realized that she's in a hospital.  Ken said that the doctors are still on the lookout for Vasospasms.  On Monday morning (2/18) Norma will undergo an Angiogram.

Ken was at her side from Saturday 10 AM to Noon today.  Other close family members have also been present to watch her when Ken is absent.  Saturday night Norma only got one hour of sleep.  She is still very restless and needs to be watched constantly.  She must remain in restraints so that the IVs stay connected.

Ken has one additional special favor.  Besides continually praying for Norma he has asked that we pray for the daughter of Terri Krawiec, Ken's former assistant.  Lydia Bank, who is herself a nurse, survived a kidney transplant years ago but has been fighting various medical conditions since then.  Lydia and her husband have been in the adoption process for years and were blessed to receive a baby very recently.  Please add her to your prayer list because they have found a spot on her lung.  She is undergoing tests at this time.  Would you please include Lydia in your prayers?
